Cranberry/Tri-River Trail

Getting to the Rail-Trail from Nearby Cities

  • From Beckley, WV  Follow US 19 north across New River Gorge Bridge to Rt. 39 at Summersville. Turn right on Rt. 39 east, then follow about 30 miles to Fenwick, trailhead on left at tee intersection. See detailed &Trailhead& directions below to each location.
  • From Pittsburgh, PA  Follow I-79 south about 160 miles, then exit US 19 south. Follow US 19 south about 15 miles to Rt 55 exit left at Muddlety. Be alert for tricky turn immediately after exit, Rt 55 goes to the right. Follow Rt 55 east about 15 miles to Craigsville. At Craigsville turn right to continue east on Rt. 55. Continue on Rt. 55 about 8 miles to first trailhead at Holcomb. See detailed &Trailhead& directions below to each location.
  • From Charleston, WV  Follow I-79 north about 60 miles, then exit US 19 south. Follow US 19 south about 15 miles to Rt 55 exit left at Muddlety. Be alert for tricky turn immediately after exit, Rt 55 goes to the right. Follow Rt 55 east about 15 miles to Craigsville. At Craigsville turn right to continue east on Rt. 55. Continue on Rt. 55 about 8 miles to first trailhead at Holcomb. See detailed &Trailhead& directions below to each location.

Finding the Trailheads

  • Holcomb   This is the recommended trailhead. The rail trail crosses Rt. 55 just east of girder bridge crossing of Cherry River, about 20 miles east of US Rt. 19 or about 6 miles west of Richwood. Small yellow trailhead signs are posted on Rt. 55. Trailhead parking is available on either side of road. From Rt. 55 facing Cherry River bridge, right is northwest toward the Mouth of the Cranberry River, and left is east toward Richwood. The trail is best going toward the Mouth of the Cranberry River.
  • Fenwick  Trailhead is located at the intersection of Rt. 39 and Rt. 55, west of Rt. 39 Cherry River bridge and between Rt. 55 and the Cherry River. Trailhead parking is next to the Fenwick Post Office. From bridge turn left and immediately left again to trailhead. Trail goes underneath bridge between Rt. 55 and River. From Rt. 55 facing Cherry River and post office, right is west toward Holcomb and the Mouth of the Cranberry River, and left is east toward Richwood.

  • Richwood  At red light on Rt. 39 in Richwood business district, turn south, downhill, toward depot. Depot on right about 1 -1/2 blocks from Rt. 39. Parking available on local streets or in shopping center about two blocks south of depot. From depot trail goes west toward Holcomb and the mouth of the Cranberry River.
